The tradition of cutting birthday cakes- the truth behind it
Well, it just cannot be denied that birth days are one of the most specials days in a person’s life. We offer varieties of gifts to the special birthday person. But apart from all the gifts, a birthday cake is always a MUST HAVE in each and every birthday. Sometimes we order birthday cakes online, sometimes we order birthday cakes from retail shops. But have you ever wondered why birthday cakes are a must one? From where did this tradition come?
·         It all started in the 15th century. The bakeries of Germany during that period came up with the idea that during special occasions, like anniversaries, birthdays or weddings, cakes will be cut. Initially the cakes that were introduced, was a single layer cake for the special occasions.
·         Gradually, the modification of the cakes started. During the 17th century, the birthday cakes were made much more elaborate. Decorations like icing, layers and flowers were put in the cakes. But such decorated cakes were only affordable for the wealthy class. And for the middle or lower class people, the single layered cakes were affordable.
·         After that, during the 18th century, the food and baking utensils became much more accessible to the common people. The reason was industrial revolution. Price of commodities started going down significantly. This is why the number of decorated cakes, which we presently order as cake delivery online, started increasing. And that resulted in the reduction of price for the beautifully decorated birthday cakes.
There are also few more explanations about the tradition of birthday cakes. Some historians are of the opinion that Greece was the first country to introduce the tradition of cake. The Greeks started to make honey cakes or bread, which was later named as cakes. These are still found today in cake delivery online stores.
While some people are also of the opinion that Ancient Romans celebrated different forms of birthdays. Private birthday celebrations, birthdays in city temples and birthdays in the imperial family. For the celebration of a 50th birthday, a honey cake was brought, that also contained grated cheese and olive oil. Well, now days cakes have become really common, you can easily order for cake delivery online or even order birthday cakes in retail shops in advance.
